TheCollege of Education has been successful onmany fronts this year. Dr.
AlaricWilliamswas recognized for excellence in leadership and service, taking
thePresidentialAward in this category. Dr. Chris Purkisswas a finalist in the
categoryof excellence in teaching. Dr. DonnaGee received aTeacherQuality
Grant formathematics education. Dr. Chris Purkiss received aTeacherQuality
Grant for science education. Both of these grantswill involve a consortium of
West Texas universities. Dr.MarvaSolomon has received aNationalWriting
Project grant.Many thanks go toDr. Purkiss for sponsoringKappaDeltaPi and
Dr. AmyWilliamson for being chapter president for PhiDeltaKappa. Thanks
also toDr. DeboraBanker andDr. CharleneBustos for sponsoring the campus
chapter for theCouncil for Exceptional Children. TheCollege published its first
online edition of its professional refereed journal under the guidance of editors
Dr. AmyWilliamson andDr. BlakeHightower. Dr. DeborahBankerwas
recognized by theCREATE organization for herworkwith online learning.
Several of our student teacherswere recognized byCREATE as outstanding
future teachers. TheCurriculum and Instruction department has had a banner year
with its online graduate offerings.
Wewill say farewell to retiring facultymemberDr. AnnBullion-Mears.Wewish
herwell. Dr. LesleyCasarez joined the faculty this year after completingher
doctorate at TTU and isworking as a visitingprofessor for theDepartment of
Curriculum and Instruction. Shewill join the facultypermanently this next year.
DanielMartinez joined the staff of theEPICenter and is doing a great job
advisinggraduate students. KevinFowler joined the staff of theCollege as a
ResearchCoordinator. TheCollege continues to be nationally accredited. As the
standards change to a newly combined accreditation group, theCouncil for the
Accreditation for Educator Preparation, we prepared by sending a delegation to
the springnational conference. Attendeeswere: BlakeHightower, Deborah
Banker,MarvaSolomon,WendyStorms, JimSummerlin, andAmyWilliamson.
Our technology specialist,MeghanSeibert, hasmoved toAustin to take a job in
the commercial sector. Please say thank you to all of our faculty and staff for the
significantwork that they are doing to help our candidates be successful in their
careers. I continue to receive positive feedback about the qualityof our
graduates.
