Awards and Other Doings...
Dr. Christine Purkiss was awarded a $403,000
grant from NOAA for teacher professional devel-
opment on Climate Literacy.
Dr. Marva Solomon had an article published in a
National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE)
journal, Talking Points, in October, 2012. The title
was "Why can't you just say, 'It's cute?'"The role
of audience in First Graders' digital storytelling.
Dr. Marva Solomon received an NCATE SEED
grant that continues the Pearl of the Concho
Writing Project as a mini-conference. The mini
conference takes place in the summer of 2013.
Dr. Marva Solomon had a short piece published
in NCTE's Language Arts journal in September 2
012 titled: “Would your students enjoy writing
their own graphic novels? You bet they would! “

Dr. Sandra Maxedon has joined in a partnership
with the Head Start/Early Head Start in SAISD, to
provide field work opportunities at Rio Vista
Head Start.
Jennifer Lilly Engle, past Pearl of the Concho
Writing Program participant, received the Affili-
ate Newsletter Award at the fall annual meeting
of NCTE. She is currently a high school English
teacher in Eldorado.
Christine Pruitt (pictured below left) won the
Ram Star Staff Award for October 2012.
Wendy Storms (pictured below right) won the
Alumni Associations Outstanding Staff for 2012
Award that was presented at Homecoming.

Kappa Delta Pi
SARTA
Kappa Delta Pi, International Honor Society
in Education, initiated 50 new members on
October 30th at their fall banquet. To be a
member of KDP, undergraduate students
have to have a 3.0 overall GPA, be a sopho-
more and have at least 50 hours towards
their degree. Graduate students have to
have a 3.25 GPA and at least 6 hours of edu-
cational course work. All students have to
attend an initiation ceremony to be a mem-
ber. KDP officers are currently looking at the
possibility of an online arm to the chapter so
that our graduate students can be included
without having to attend the initiation cere-
mony. New officers for the 2013 year in-
clude Nelson Thomas, President; Tabitha
Rivera, President Elect; Jessica Hicks, VP for
Membership; and Brandi Brosh, VP for Pro-
grams.
Scholarships
San Angelo Retired Teachers'
Association recipients for schol-
arships for Fall 2012 were Brit-
tany Vaughan, a 4-8 Mathemat-
ics specialist, and Kimberly
Jones, an EC-6 with Special Edu-
cation specialist. Candidates
who are currently student teach-
ing are eligible to be considered
for the SARTA scholarship. Con-
