ESSET: Earth System Science for
Elementary Teachers Climate Camp
Summer Grant Programs
Twenty-eight teachers participated in a three week professional
development workshop this summer here at ASU. Funded by
NOAA and led by Dr. Christine Purkiss, teachers learned how
to teach concepts related to climate literacy. As part of the
program, one hundred elementary aged children came to the
Climate Camp where teacher participants were able to practice
the activities they had learned during the program.
Teacher participants had also completed an 8 week
graduate level course in the spring regarding teaching
science through inquiry. During the Fall of 2013 they will be implementing
concepts and activities into their classrooms and will return to ASU in late Spring
2014 for a one day Climate Literacy Conference.
Funds for this grant provided staff development for teachers in Writing Workshop for
two weeks in the summer of 2013. The funds also purchased iPad minis for use by
the Pearl of the Concho Writing Project's Youth (Grades 3-5) and Teen (Grades 6-8)
Writing Camps. These camps were led by Dr. Marva Solomon.
Dr. Solomon’s Faculty Research Enhancement Grant
provides funds to investigate the use of iPads in ap-
proving content area and literacy learning of primary
grade English Language Learners. The grant will put the technology in the hands of
pre-service teachers working in 1st grade and kindergarten ESL classrooms.
