Fiji andNewZealand
Candidateswho are interested in a study abroad
opportunity are encouraged to consider joiningDr.
DonnaGee andDr. CharleneBustos in the 2015
International Studies Program toFiji andNew
Zealand to be conducted June 6 - June 30, 2015.
NewZealand is aworld leader in developing
effective literacy instruction for students. Fiji and
NewZealand have an indigenous population that
speaks a different language. They aremulti-racial,
multi-lingual countries similar to theUS. The
native language is used in the earlygrades for
classroom instruction. Similar to our bilingual
education programs, these countries successfully
educate second language learners. They are able to
overcome their learningdifferences and achieve a
high rate of literacynationwide.
Fiji has a 26%poverty rate. However, they still
maintain a successful education system resulting in
a 94% adult literacy rate. TheUS is listed as having
a 12%poverty rate. Byobserving in thirdworld
schools, candidateswill be able to see how another
culture dealswith poverty. NewZealand is aworld
leader in developing effective literacy instruction
for students. InUS colleges and universities, this
methodwas encouraged for adoption in schools
during the 1980s and 1990s. NewZealand reading
researchers, such asMarieClay, led theway for a
more user-friendlyview of beginning reading
instruction incorporatingShared andGuided
Reading lessons. In place of the build up
vocabulary textbooks used in theUS since
the 1950s,more child-centered reading
materials provided an instructional support
system usingoral language as a background
for students. Thesemethods are part of the
BalancedLiteracy Instruction in place inUS
schools today. Candidateswill travel
throughout the two countries visiting schools
and holdingdiscussionswith educators as
well as visiting cultural resources, sites, and
centers.
